Kim Soo Ja
A Needle Woman

October 25 - November 12, 1999
"I present the installation by two channel performance video, which I made during my stay at CCA .

In the performance on a street in Shibuya in Tokyo, I locate my body in the middle of the most crowded spot as 'A non-movement site-specific figure.' It relates and sews my body with every single person who is passing by there, and simultaneously wraps a hundred thousand of people coming and going inside of my body and spirit. Still it completely isolates my presence from everybody in reality. For the performance in the nature in Kitakyushu, I serve my body as 'A movement site-specific figure' which, on the contrary to the one in the city, explores every corner of nature examining equivalence of my body to the state of nature and space.

Throughout these conflicts of two opposite elements as 'Stillness and Movement' and 'Relationship and Isolation' in the context of space and time, also of society and nature, I am questioning the reality of our body in everyday life in mobile society, by acting and making decision of 'location and dislocation' of my body. "

Kim Soo Ja stayed at the CCA Kitakyushu as a professor of the Research program during a month in October.
