THE BOY FROM MARS

February 20 - March 31, 2006

CCA Kitakyushu Project Gallery presented Philippe Parreno’s “The Boy From Mars”.

“The Boy From Mars” is 11 minutes film, and was shot in Chiang Mai, Thailand, where Rirkrit Tiravanija and his friends have started The Land Foundation. At the site, Parreno and an architect François Roche built the structure called “Hybrid Muscle.” It is used as the main setting for the film, since the building “provided the scenario for a film, and at the same time the film produced the building.”

Surrounding the rice fields and the forest, in the film “Hybrid Muscle” shows various faces because of the daylight, time, animals and people. The building itself is illuminated from inside with orange light, and it seems that it has been according with the environment regardless its tube-like peculiar shape. Mostly it is silent except Devendra Banhart’s music unfolded in the end.

In 2002 Parreno stayed in CCA Kitakyushu and as CCA Artists’ Book Series he produced a book titled “The Boy From Mars.” The book consists of the film stills, and in the beginning it is said “The Boy From Mars” is the first element of a game between Parreno and Roche.
