Joan Jonas (born in 1936, New York) was one of the first artists to integrate performance, video and the visual arts. These experiments contributed to paving the way for younger artists working in related genres. Focusing on these various media, Jonas continues to develop her work while exploring an ongoing concern with a narrative form. Often inspired by other cultures she combines aspects of theatricality and the language of ritual in her practice.
Her work and performance have been shown internationally including The Museum of Modern Art, New York (2009-10), Centre D’Art Contemporain, Genève (2008) and MACBA-Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (2007). She has also participated in numerous group shows in The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2007), Venice Biennale (2009) and Bienal de São Paulo (2008).
