Hamish Fulton
An Object cannot compete with an Experience.

December 15, 1999 - January 28, 2000
The project gallery presents a new work by Hamish Fulton (born in 1946 in London).

During March 1999 I made 7 one day walks on Hikosan, a sacred hill in Kyushu. For my December exhibition I will present a wall text resulting from that experience.

I ATTEMPT TO MAKE LINKS BETWEEN CONTEMPORARY ART AND CONTEMPORARY WALKING.

I ACKNOWLEDGE THE SCALE AND STANDARDS
OF OUTDOOR ADVENTURE SPORTS- OUTSIDE THE CONFINES OF CONTEMPORARY ART.

WALKING IS THE CONSTANT THE ART MEDIUM IS THE VARIABLE.

QUESTION: IS, "THE WALK"- REALLY- THE ART?

ANSWER: "THE WALK"- CAN BE THOUGHT OF AS "AN ARTFORM"

ANSWER: BUT, UNLIKE "AN ARTOBJECT"

ANSWER: A WALK CANNOT BE SOLD.

MY ARTWORKS EQUAL CONTROL

MY WALKS EQUAL FREEDOM.

IT IS A FACT, NOT AN OPINION-

THAT THIS RIVER IS FAST DEEP AND COLD.

CRASHING WAVES, BAREFEET, RED PETALS A NECLACE OF SHELLSÉÉ. LOST TO THE STARS. SLOWNESS.
